Mike Strickland

What is your job title and brief job description?

Occupational Scuba Diver/Entrepreneur – Strickland’s Diving

As an entrepreneur, I plan, designate daily dives with the site managers, sometimes even a week before. I work with the divers and site managers of each company we work with. I inspect the dive equipment regularly to ensure a safe quality dive, arrange travel to the various communities, then travel to the designated sites by vehicle and boat. We dive on most sites at least once a week based on the sites and the location, dive tables and biosecurity. We are in desperate need of divers on a regular basis.

What type of service or product do you or your company provide?

We offer diving services throughout the entire Coast of Bays region, we do dives for mooring, anchoring, etc. We assist by taking fish samples, boat haul inspections, bottom surveys, and sometimes use cameras for stills and video footage.

How is your career related to the aquaculture industry?

I have a Linesman trade as well as an Aquaculture Technician and Occupational Scuba Diver. The diving is directly related to the industry and there is a huge demand for more trained occupational scuba divers in our region.

What is your educational background and/or work experience and how has it assisted you in this aquaculture career path?

My occupational scuba diving and aquaculture technician training has assisted me directly into this career path with aquaculture.

What attracted you to your current job?

I lived in Ontario for a few years and hated the hustle and bustle and couldn’t wait to get back home. Once I moved home, I began working in the industry and was fortunate to be promoted from site worker, to manager, then to aquaculture diver.  I then started my own business, Stricklands Diving to service the need of the industry and contract our divers out to others in the industry as required.

What are the benefits of this aquaculture job?

As an entrepreneur, I am my own boss.  Also, with a growing industry, I have many opportunities for expansion and I can live in my home town with my wife and children who also love it here. I get to travel to the many communities in the region with different duties each day and I also get to meet a lot of very interesting people.

What is your favourite thing about your job?

I love to travel and meet new people. Due to the high level of travel within the Coast of Bays, we get to visit many communities on a regular weekly basis.  I love being on the water. I also get to come home each day to my family and remain in NL.

What advice would you give to people considering job opportunities in aquaculture?

I would recommend that they try and obtain education in their preferred field of work whether it is as an aquaculture technician, biologist, diver, or even physics for dive tables, etc.

Our company is continously looking for divers. We may even be able to assist with the training. Please email me at sdiving@bell.blackberry.net for more information.
