Blue Mussels

NAIA mussels -15 (1)Mytilus edulis, or as they’re better known, blue mussels, are a type of shellfish that grow quickly and profusely in Newfoundland and Labrador. The Newfoundland blue mussels are succulent, sweet tasting, and affordable ocean treats that come from our nutrient-rich bays caused by icy Arctic currents.

Newfoundland blue mussels are high in protein, low in fat, and an above-average source of heart-healthy Omega-3 fatty acids. One serving of mussels provides close to 100% of the daily-recommended intake of zinc, promoting good growth, brain function, and enhanced immunity to guard against flu and colds.

Newfoundland blue mussels are grown using the long-line technique in the iceberg chilled waters of the North Atlantic Ocean. It is because of this that they are superior in taste and quality compared to mussels raised in warmer waters, or wild and bottom-cultured mussels.

Newfoundland blue mussels are grown by independent, environmentally conscious farmers who produce only 100% natural mussels. Pride for the product as well as the environment is shown by using only government approved and inspected farms, lab-based monitoring, and the continuous industry commitment to the highest possible quality.

The aquaculture of Newfoundland blue mussels has been steadily on the rise after more than tripling production from 1,051 tonnes in 2000 to 3,390 tonnes in 2007. The growing demand for the delicious and distinctive Newfoundland blue mussels is opening new market opportunities across the globe for our local partners.

  • Mussels are known as filter feeders. They eat by passing water through their gill filaments and feeding on organic materials such as phytoplankton or zooplankton.
  • A 2½ inch mussel processes more than 15 gallons of water per day.
  • Female mussels are orange and male mussels are white, but they share the same great taste.
